Born in London in 1995, Timothy studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Martin Outram, graduating in 2016 with the Queen’s Award for Excellence. Last autumn he joined the Kronberg Academy in Germany, where he studies with Nobuko Imai, alongside classes with Antoine Tamestit and Tabea Zimmermann. 

In 2016 Timothy was the first ever British winner of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT). Previous awards include 1st Prize at the 2014 Cecil Aronowitz and 2nd Prize at the 2015 Windsor Festival International String Competitions.  

Engagements this season include recitals at Wigmore Hall, Munich Gasteig, Verbier Academy & Festival and Schloss Elmau. He takes part in the Eggenfelden Klassisch, Valdres Sommersymfoni, Koblenz, Musikdorf Ernen, Beethoven Bonn Festivals, IMS Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music and gives performances with the Nash Ensemble. In 2017 he returns to appear as soloist with the Baden-Baden Philharmonie and performs Mozart with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Earlier this year he recorded his  first CD of music by Vieuxtemps for Champs Hill Records, due for release shortly.

As a soloist Timothy has performed the Walton Concerto at St. John’s Smith Square supported by the Walton Foundation, and appeared with the Zagreb Soloists, Rotterdam Philharmonic Strings, Young Musicians Symphony and Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestras, performing concertos by Martinů, Bruch, Forsyth and Mozart. Earlier this year he gave the premiere of a new work by Desmond Clarke with the Melos Sinfonia at Milton Court in London.   

A keen chamber musician, Timothy has taken part in the Bad Kissinger Sommer Festival (Germany), Schubertiade Festival (Austria), Musique à Marsac (France), Accademia dei Cameristi (Italy), and the Next Generation Festival in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland).  He has collaborated with Ana Chumachenko, Maxim Vengerov, Lawrence Power, Tabea Zimmermann, Steven Isserlis and Franz Helmerson.  Between 2011-14 he was a member of the Celan Quartet, undertaking residencies at the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival and Musikdorf Ernen (Switzerland).

Other awards include the European String Teachers Association Prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria, and a Special Prize at the Max Rostal International Competition in Berlin in 2015.  For three years until 2016 he worked intensively at the International Musikakademie in Fürstentem, Liechtenstein as a scholarship holder. a gorgeous tone, a thoughtful approach to phrasing and an infectious sense of impetuosity….The {Sonata in B flat] needs a serenely introspective performance, and gets one.   Ridout makes the most of the viola’s cellist timbre in the first moment and the operatic sway of the second movement barcarolle….{Ridout] relishes the technical showmanship of the Capriccio in C minor and the exuberance of the neo-baroque Étude.

There is a still centre to both his sound and stage presence that belies his 21 years.   Quiet, thoughtful assurance distinguished the opening Allegro amabile [Brahms], which was teased into shape by the kind of natural rubato that breathes life into Brahms's long phrases and yet can elude many more experienced musicians.   It's a gift.

Timothy Ridout, with his technical perfection and beautifully warm and soft tone, perfectly matched the Romantic yearning [of Cecil Forsyth's Viola Concerto in G minor] from the outset. In his pronounced and lyrical interpretation the soft, singing passages particularly stood out, though his playing was also full of drama and brooding temper.
